Lake
Superior Zendo is organized as a Soto Zen Buddhist Temple in the lineage of Dainin Katagiri-Roshi, a Japanese Zen master who founded the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center. Our purpose is to support, encourage, and facilitate the practice of Soto Zen
Buddhism in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The
Lake Superior Zendo was founded in 1990. For many years we sat in member homes, and in 2002 we purchased our present property, a small farm house in north Marquette. We have two ordained priests, Rev. Tesshin Paul Lehmberg, Head Priest, and Rev. Ichiryu John Moran, Resident Priest. Tesshin and Ichiryu are senior students of Rev. Shoken Winecoff, a dharma heir of Dainin Katagiri and now Abbot of Ryumonji Zen Monastery, Dorchester, Iowa. Lake Superior Zendo maintains an informal relationship with Ryumonji.
